Chapter 17
Ronan and I sit in silence as the limousine trundles down country lanes. The sky has grown dark, and â unlike home â the Scottish countryside has no streetlamps to guide the way.
Just before we got into the car, Julian patted Ronan on the shoulder and gestured to two heavy cameras sitting in the back of the car.
âWeâre going to need a holiday vlog from both of you. Try to consider what the viewers want to see. Romance. Cheese. Give them a little sizzle.â He winked at us before his face turned serious. âBe careful with the equipment. If you damage anything, youâre paying for its replacement.â
My stomach is in knots again. I had figured they would want footage of our getaway, but I was hoping some camera crew would be there. But nooo, it has to be just me and Ronan, loving it up in some lavish hotel on a remote island.
I side glance at the dark outline of his side profile. Heâs sitting perfectly still and resting his elbow on the side of the door, his head titled to the side.
âAre you asleep?â I wanted to keep the thought to myself, but my mouth canât keep a secret. Ronanâs shoulders jolt and he takes a gruff intake of breath.
âNo,â he says.
âLiar.â I shove him and laugh. He grabs my hand and holds it to his chest. A steady heartbeat thumps against my skin and my fingertips tingle, as if his pulse is charging my electrons.
âYouâre not still mad at me then?â There I go again; blurting out every thought to cross my mind. Itâs a good thing itâs dark in the car, this way I donât have to see Ronanâs facial reactions. Heâs probably scowling at me.
âWhat are you talking about? Iâve never been mad at you,â he counters. I take my hand back gently and fiddle with the stitching on my seatbelt. Is he just playing with me? Or did I jump to the worst case-scenario when he walked away?
âFine. Upset or whateverâââ
Ronan shifts closer to me and tucks a strand of hair behind my ear.
âNone of those, either.â His voice is so low it sends heat charging through my body. âWhy would you think I was mad at you?â
My brain races to pick up evidence in support of my argument. But my body melts under his touch. He traces my jaw with his fingertip, and my mind goes fuzzy.
âYou didnât come to lunchâ¦â I take a shallow, uneven breath as his fingers graze my collarbone. âI couldnât find you anywhere.â Ronan leans in, presses his lips against my cheekbone, and cups my face with his hands.
âThatâs sweet, you missed me.â He leaves a trail of burning kisses from my cheek to my lips, but before he can deepen the kiss, I push him away.
âWhat happened to you? Where did you go?â I demand answers. Everyone says they love a mysterious man, but unanswered questions drive me crazy. And not in a good way.
Before Ronan can answer, a flood of light fills the limousine and the car rolls to a stop.
